Nicaragua has remained relatively safe while many of its neighbouring Central American countries have been engulfed by violence. Although drug trafficking is increasing on the country’s Atlantic coast and is a worry for law enforcement, Nicaragua’s murder rate continues to be low for the region. The country’s community oriented police is widely credited with this success.
